deborah brown public installations

of memphis animal shelter, memphis, tennessee
For the City of Memphis Animal Shelter, I designed large scale mosaics that depict pets and other animals--dogs, a cat, a horse, a goat, a pig, and even a skunk—in a jaunty procession across the façade of the building. Although no humans are pictured, the theme of the artwork is our stewardship of these creatures, conveyed by the leashes, collars, and identification tags that are worn by all the animals in the artwork. The human presence is implied by the taut leashes that connect the pets to an unseen hand just outside the picture frame. The tone of the artwork is humorous, but a serious theme is suggested: we must take care of our animals. The interior artwork consists of three mosaic panels sited in the adoption areas of the shelter that represent close relationships between humans and individual animal companions.
